Kyparissi: From Ancient Kyphanta to Today

Kyparissi, a picturesque settlement on the northeastern coast of Laconia, is known for its isolation and distinctive natural beauty. The village’s history dates back to antiquity, when the area was part of greater Laconia, influenced by Sparta and other civilizations of the Peloponnese.

The ancient name of Kyparissi is said to have been “Kyphanta.”

During the Byzantine era, the area was incorporated into the empire and maintained close ties with the monasteries and religious centers of Mount Parnon. However, there are not many specific historical records due to the village’s isolation, which persisted through the following centuries.
The location of Kyparissi, hidden behind the steep slopes of Mount Parnon, helped protect it from pirate raids and made it difficult for enemies to access, preserving its traditional form and character for centuries.

Until the 20th century, Kyparissi remained isolated from the main urban centers of the region, maintaining a way of life based on agriculture and fishing.

In recent years, the village has become a destination for nature lovers and hikers, thanks to its unique location by the Myrtoan Sea and its clean, tranquil shores.
